Siblings Bedah and Zeina and their neighbour Aida have been close since young. They have a sisterhood: Sharing secrets. Uplifting each other. Trusting without question. Laughter, mischief and loyalty. Their bond is unbreakable.
But what happens when ‘life’ happens? Zeina walks away from her thriving company to follow her conscience as an activist. Bedah must give up her childhood dream because of family obligations. Aida’s personal life gets entangled with the two sisters. Life gets messy. The solidarity begins to crack. They are filled with suspicion, betrayal and shame.
Will these three queens be able to reconnect? Recapture what they had before? What will it take to save their sisterhood? They may be able to forgive each other. But can they forgive themselves?
Haresh Sharma’s latest play is a gripping and moving exploration of sisterhood, faith and empathy. Co-directed by Sharma and Adib Kosnan, 3 Queens features a stellar cast of Munah Bagharib, Siti Hajar Gani, and Siti Khalijah Zainal.

THE NECESSARY STAGE
Established in 1987, The Necessary Stage (TNS) is a non-profit theatre company with charity status. Our mission is to create challenging, indigenous and innovative theatre that touchesmthe heart and mind. TNS has the honour of being the only arts company in Singapore helmed by two Cultural Medallion recipients: Artistic Director and Founder Alvin Tan and Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma. The company is also the organiser and curator of the annual Singapore Fringe Festival.
Having presented more than 120 original plays in Singapore and abroad, TNS remains focused on breaking new ground in original local content and intercultural and interdisciplinary exploration. For our Main Season, we produce an average of two plays a year. The works are original, mostly devised pieces created in a collaborative process that is based on research, improvisation before scripting, and input from all members of the production.
TNS has also been unwavering in its efforts to nurture new talents and local content, through various platforms including youth- and senior-oriented training initiatives, commissions at the Fringe Festival, and laboratory and developmental platforms, including the TNS Devising Platform since 2020. The company also has a comprehensive online archival portal at tnsarchives.com, providing the public access to its 38 years of history.

Haresh Sharma is the Resident Playwright of The Necessary Stage (TNS), and one of Singapore’s most celebrated contemporary playwrights with more than 130 plays staged in over 20 cities. Over the decades, he is known for crafting fearless and thoughtful devised theatre productions rooted firmly in collaboration, reflecting socio-political issues that are very much on the pulse of the times. These have spanned a diverse spread of themes, including political detention, minority communities, racial and gender discrimination and inequality.
With his deep passion for education and mentorship, Haresh has been training young theatre practitioners under TNS, through popular workshop series including Devising with Actors and Playwrights and Playwrights’ Cove. He has also worked with organisations, to create plays that advocate for crucial issues such as dementia, palliative caregiving, and biomedical ethics. He recently collaborated with disability arts company ART:DIS on Invisible, a play about invisible disabilities where he explored the use of embedded narration.
Haresh has been conferred the Southeast Asian Writers (or S.E.A. Write) Award, the Cultural Medallion and an Honorary Doctor of Arts by Bath Spa University (UK). As the Founder of Rainshadow Studios (rainshadowstudios.org), a climate arts and education non-profit company, she recently debuted the immersive experience Scarce City at the National Gallery Singapore. Her practice is informed by over 15 years of scenographic experience for major international institutions, including on Broadway, HBO, The Public Theater, and The Kennedy Center. She later obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Theatre Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2007, after which she took a brief hiatus to devote time to motherhood.
Although she is of Malay ethnicity, Ema has actively contributed to productions across multiple cultural and linguistic communities. Her professional practice reflects a firm belief that language is not a barrier to artistic collaboration; rather, the language of theatre is inherently universal and transcends ethnic boundaries.
Upon returning to the field, Ema cultivated a distinctive artistic philosophy she describes as “street style.” This methodology intentionally departs from conventional frameworks, allowing for expansive exploration, experimentation, and productive unpredictability. Currently, she continues to advance her craft by engaging with emerging challenges and extending creative possibilities within the sphere of digital design.
SAFUAN JOHARI – SOUND DESIGNER
Safuan Johari is an artist who works primarily as a composer, music producer and sound designer. Music-making is usually a world building exercise and the resulting microcosms often meander through traditional, experimental and popular topographies of Nusantara (Maritime Southeast Asia) culture. Started out as a prominent figure in Singapore’s underground music scene, he has expanded his practice into composing for theatre, dance, films and multimedia installations.
Over the years, his fascination for imagining a speculative future built upon the spectres of cultural past grew deeper. His practice tends to study the complex cycles of, and complicated relationships between mythology, history and futurity. New perspectives are constantly formed, which provided the motivation for Safuan to explore his works beyond music and sound. The recent years have seen him taking directorial and curatorial roles for commissioned works by The Esplanade, Singapore International Festival of the Arts and National Gallery Singapore. This expansion in breadth also sees him experimenting with generative audio-visual digital media.
Individually and as a collaborator, Safuan has performed, exhibited or presented works at Palais de Tokyo Paris, tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf, Festival/Tokyo, Perth Festival, Sydney Festival, Worldwide Festival Sète, Singapore International Festival of the Arts and the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. He is also currently an Associate Artist of The Necessary Stage.
