How do words and images come together in comics, and what happens when we translate them? In this two-hour interactive workshop designed for youths aged 15 and above, participants will explore the art of translating comics across languages and cultures. This session invites participants to try their hand at translating excerpts from a comic title into their Mother Tongue language(s).
After experienced translators and facilitators share their tips – from retaining humour and tone to ensuring cultural nuances are conveyed effectively – participants will engage in hands-on translation, working individually or in small groups to translate the provided comic excerpts. The workshop will conclude with a sharing segment, where participants discuss their translation choices, challenges, and reflections on how translation shapes meaning, accessibility and representation in comics.
This programme is commissioned by SWF and curated by Singapore Book Council.
