概要

Twelve White Chrysanthemums is a contemporary dance triple bill that brings together three distinct artistic voices from Belgium, Taiwan, and Singapore to explore the complex and multifaceted ways in which different cultures process grief and navigate the emotional aftermath of departures.

Through the universal lens of loss, each of the three works delves into themes of mourning, remembrance, and healing, inviting the audience to reflect on the often unspoken experiences of grief in the context of varied cultural practices and beliefs.

The title of the work symbolises purity, respect, and remembrance, echoing the significance of the chrysanthemum flower in many East Asian cultures, where it is traditionally associated with funerary rites and the honouring of ancestors. In this interdisciplinary presentation, dance becomes the medium through which personal and collective sorrow is expressed, shared, and understood, making space for introspection and emotional catharsis.

Three short works, from 3 different countries and cultures, create a dynamic and emotionally resonant experience that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, offering a space for reflection on the impact of loss and the healing potential of artistic expression. By presenting these works within a singular framework, 12 White Chrysanthemums fosters cross-cultural dialogue and deepens the understanding of grief as a powerful, yet ultimately transformative force.

This triple bill aims to spark conversation, inspire empathy, and invite audiences to consider the personal and cultural narratives that shape our collective experiences of grief. Through contemporary dance, Twelve White Chrysanthemums honours the universal nature of sorrow while celebrating the resilience and strength that emerge in the face of life’s most difficult moments.

GUEST WORKSHOP

1. Workshop A by Compagnie Irene K. (Belgium)

Compagnie Irene K. is a contemporary dance company founded in 1978 in Eupen (Belgium) by its art director Irene Kalbusch. Choreographies don’t want to be narrative. The spaces open in all directions, always creating new constellations. The human being - his desires, his fears, his visions - underlies this work. From the very beginning, Irène Kalbusch has been working with professional dancers of many different nationalities. The Company has adopted an own style that can be attributed to contemporary dance theatre close to the “Tanztheater”. More than performances on stage - including for children, the Company offers performances in urban/ alternative landscapes and interesting architectures. Compagnie Irene K. regularly develops educational, creative and interdisciplinary projects.

2. Workshop B by Hsu Chen Wei Dance Company (Taiwan)

Hsu Chen Wei Dance Company, led by choreographer Chen-Wei Hsu, places the body at the center of its artistic exploration, delving into the intersection of life and death. Through dance, the company portrays the weight of existence and the subtle nuances of human emotion. Blending contemporary movement vocabulary with theatrical storytelling, each work offers a uniquely poetic perspective, guiding audiences into profound physical experiences and philosophical contemplation.

The company’s creative focus revolves around three core themes: death, the meaning of life, and personal stories. Through the dancers’ bodies, it weaves reflections on the cyclical nature of existence, allowing audiences to connect their own experiences with the performance. Chen-Wei is known for his intricate movement textures, which, combined with visual design, lighting, and spatial composition creates a ritualistic atmosphere that transforms dance into an immersive experience.
