NUS Guitar Ensemble
Established in 1981 by Cultural Medallion recipient Mr Alex Abisheganaden, NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is the region’s first Niibori guitar ensemble. Modelled after the Niibori Orchestra in Japan, GENUS showcases the distinctive musical character of the Niibori method.
As a pioneer in the Singapore guitar ensemble scene, GENUS aims to set the benchmark of musical excellence for ensembles in Singapore. Moving forward, GENUS aims to promote a greater love for guitar ensemble music so as to establish the Niibori art form as an integral part of Singapore’s arts landscape.
Recent productions include Florescence in October 2025, Strings and Reeds: A Meadow in Melody in March 2025, Ephemeral in October 2024, Aventura in March 2024 and Continuum in October 2023.
NUS Harmonica
Founded in 1981, NUS Harmonica aims to promote harmonica performance as a unique and versatile art form, by showcasing the distinct sounds that can be produced by harmonicas of different pitches and tones.
NUS Harmonica has a well-established history in the harmonica scene, both locally and abroad. It has won medals at the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival and performed in national events such as the Singapore Youth Olympic Games City Celebrations. The group has also organized the Singapore Youth Harmonica Festival twice, with the goal of increasing enthusiasm for harmonica playing among youths.
The group performs in two annual concert series, Impressions and Soirée, held in October and March respectively. Recent productions include Impressions 2025: Waltz Through the Ashes in October 2025, Strings and Reeds: A Meadow in Melody in March 2025, Impressions 2024: Journey of Life in October 2024 and Soirée 2024: Cinematic Symphonies in March 2024.
NUS Angklung Ensemble
Established in 2007, the NUS Angklung Ensemble (NUSAE) is Singapore’s first collegiate angklung ensemble, dedicated to showcasing the expressive range of this traditional Indonesian bamboo instrument. Recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the angklung produces only one note per instrument — requiring every performance to be built on close musical coordination and harmony among players.
Blending tradition with modernity, NUSAE performs a wide repertoire spanning folk, pop, and classical genres, creating music that is both accessible and vibrant. The ensemble continues to draw members from all backgrounds who share a love for collaborative music-making. Recent performances include Strings and Reeds: A Meadow in Melody in March 2025, Pop-Up Concert in 2024, Gema Nusantara and Maroon 5 Medley in CAC+US: The Last Stage (2023)
